How to Up-Keep Your Own Older Appliances

2 Possible Reasons a Front-Load Washing Machine Will Stop Filling With Water

A washing machine is one of the most essential home appliances for homeowners. Washing machine technology has advanced over the years to the point that modern washers are fairly efficient, low-maintenance appliances. But there are still mechanical parts in a washer that can start to go on the fritz over time. If you have a front-load washing machine with water that has stopped filling properly, there are a few potential causes.

Here are a couple of the problems that can cause water fill issues in a washing machine that either require new parts or professional repair assistance.

Clogged, Kinked, or Pinched Hose

Your washing machine needs access to hot and cold water to supply the different wash settings. Two different hoses are attached between the machines and your home's water supply to fulfill these water needs. If the hoses become clogged, kinked, or pinched the water can fail to reach the washing machine in sufficient levels to properly fill the unit.

You can check for exterior issues by simply scooting the unit away from the wall and conducting a visual inspection of the two water supply hoses. If you suspect a clog, turn off the shut-off valve for the water supply before removing the hoses and checking for an issue.

Are the hoses cracked or showing signs of warping? Head to the hardware store to purchase new hoses for your machine.

Water Inlet Issue

The water inside the washing machine originates from your home's main water supply but actually enters the machine via a water inlet valve. The valve senses when the machine needs more water during a cycle and when to shut off that water supply. In order for your washer to fill properly the inlet valve needs to be functional, not blocked by any minerals or debris, and have sufficient water pressure in order to open and close.

Check to make sure the water pressure is sufficient using a pressure meter or by calling out an appliance repair tech to check the levels. If the pressure is sufficient, check that the screens inside the inlet valve hose connection aren't dirty. You can remove the screens and clean using your kitchen sink sprayer or a hose. Don't know where the screens are located? Check your owner's manual for assistance.

Is the water pressure sufficient and the screens clean? You probably need a new inlet valve. Call a repair tech from companies like A OK Appliance Service for the replacement part and installation.
